Carmelo arrived at Los Barrios pound in January 2022 and was about 6 years old on arrival. He is a gorgeous ppp cross that was handed in by his owner in a horrible state.
After having spent his whole life tied up in a horrible filthy place, with barely any food or water, without affection, with absolutely nothing, Carmelo arrived at the pound in a terrible state.
At first, he was despondent, sad, he didn’t trust anything. But if you see him now, he doesn’t look like the same dog ❤️We are seeing the real Carmelo; super affectionate, playful and most importantly, in his face you can see how grateful he is, you can see it in his smile when he comes to greet you, in his way of walking so happily, it feels good. We can't imagine how he will feel when he finally has a loving family and finds out what it’s like to sleep in a comfy bed or relax on the sofa… hopefully he won't have to wait too long to find out.
Although he was most likely never taken on a walk, he is good and attentive on the lead. He will happily carry his ball but will also relinquish it without a problem. He doesn’t seem bothered by dogs, people or cars passing by.
He has not been tested of the lead with other dogs, but outside of his cage and on walks he does not show any rivalry with others, however, we feel he should be an only dog in the home.
October 2024: After nearly three years at the pound, Carmelo is experiencing and thriving in home life thanks to his foster family! When the pound flooded, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise as Carmelo was placed in foster care, where he's showing his true colors as a wonderful companion.
His foster family reports that he's adapting beautifully to home life, suggesting he may have had a loving home in his past. In fact, he adjusted to indoor living in just 1-2 days! He's proving to be very obedient and even showing understanding when he's made a mistake - sometimes trying to play innocent by pretending to sleep on the sofa when caught somewhere he shouldn't be!
Carmelo is doing his business outdoors, and responds well to consistent walking schedules. He travels well in the car and stays calm during outings, even doing great around horses. While he has a strong prey drive, he manages well in most situations.
He's shown he can be left alone for short periods, though he might cheekily claim your favorite spot on the sofa while you're gone - quickly jumping back to "his spot" when caught! He loves playing with his tennis balls and has proven to be an incredibly adaptable and intelligent companion.
Due to his prey drive, Carmelo isn't suitable for homes with cats. However, his sweet, easygoing nature combined with his quick adjustment to home life makes him an excellent candidate for adoption. He's proving to be an even easier and more adaptable dog than initially thought.
Update on Carmelo – March 2025:
Once again, Carmelo has gone into foster care due to the risk of flooding at the pound. His foster family shares this lovely update with us:
"Everything is perfect with him. He is amazing at home and very well-behaved outside too. He loves people and only seeks human affection.
We have a 7-year-old niece, and he is incredibly sweet with her (next time they meet, I’ll make a video of them together 🩷).
He has also encountered a neighbor’s dog several times, and he either politely ignores him or greets him briefly before moving on.
It’s unbelievable that this dog has spent so long in a shelter—he truly seems like a family dog. "
Come meet this lovely boy - at his age, he deserves a comfortable home with a soft bed and all the love in the world!
