Cairo arrived at the pound in May 2026 and was estimated to be around 2 years old at the time.
Cairo was found in a quarry and arrived at the pound in a horrific condition. According to the information we received, his injuries were caused by a product used in the quarry. He must have been in terrible pain.
He was also extremely frightened, and it took a long time for rescuers to bring him to safety. For some time, they regularly fed him while patiently gaining his trust, until they were finally able to catch him.
Cairo is currently receiving treatment for the itching, his skin and wounds, and leishmania. His recovery has been slow, and unfortunately the pound is not a suitable environment for him to heal properly. The dirt, damp, heat and stressful conditions make it much harder for his skin to recover.
He needs a **foster home urgently** where he can receive the care he needs. His treatment includes medication, wound care and keeping him out of the sun until his skin is completely healed. Once his skin has healed sufficiently, he also needs regular baths, ideally once a week, to help remove the scabs, followed by careful drying.
Despite everything he has been through, Cairo has shown a kind and calm temperament. He has also recently found a friend at the pound: a female dog whom he gets along very well with. This has been lovely to see, especially after such a difficult start. However, we believe he would still be happiest in a foster home where he can receive individual care and attention while he recovers.
Cairo has been through so much, and he now desperately needs a safe, calm place where he can heal. We hope to find him a forever home or a foster home as soon as possible.
Update September 2026
Cairo was lucky to attend a big event at the land where we hope to build our future shelter. He had his own dedicated volunteer looking after him during the day.
Cairo was an absolute star throughout the event. He approached everyone who came into the pen to see him and also went to greet people at the entrance. He happily lay down next to people while they stroked him, clearly enjoying the attention. Whenever someone spoke to him, he wagged his tail happily.
Cairo interacted very well with everyone and remained calm and relaxed throughout the day. He seemed to really enjoy meeting people and receiving all the affection and attention.
Sadly, nobody fell in love with Cairo that day, so he had to return to the pound after the event. He is now waiting there for the person who will give him the forever home he deserves.
