Chauen – Two and a Half Years Behind Bars, Still Full of Hope

Chauen arrived at the pound in September 2023, around 1 year old at the time. He is a beautiful Malinois cross who was found, likely abandoned on the streets, and brought to the pound.

Chauen has now spent around two and a half years living in a small cage – far too long for such a young dog with so much life and love to give. Despite these difficult conditions, his spirit is still bright and hopeful, although the loneliness is starting to show in his eyes. Recently, we have also begun to notice signs of stereotypical behaviour linked to the stress of long-term confinement.

At first, Chauen shared his space with other dogs and enjoyed spending time on the patio with them. Over time, the others were adopted one by one, leaving him behind. This ongoing stress has made him a little tense around some unfamiliar dogs inside the pound, so he now lives alone without a cage mate. However, he does occasionally spend time on the patio with another dog and is able to relax and enjoy that company in the right setting.

Outside of the pound, everything changes for Chauen. On walks and outings with a dedicated volunteer, he shows a completely different side of himself. He is absolutely fine with other dogs in these environments, enjoying their presence and often walking alongside them with ease. He especially loves going out with Yogurin, another young, playful male, and together they run through fields, splash in the river, and enjoy the kind of freedom that shows his true nature.

One of the highlights of his life is that this volunteer regularly takes him out a few times a week, often together with Yogurin. They also travel very well in the car, and these small trips and changes of scenery are something he clearly looks forward to and truly enjoys.

On walks, his curiosity and enthusiasm really shine through. He is eager to explore every new scent and sound. Although he can sometimes pull on the lead, he responds well to his name and to treats, showing intelligence and a willingness to learn.

What truly makes Chauen special is his love for people. He is affectionate and clearly craves human connection. His soulful eyes seem to ask for what he has been missing for so long – a family of his own.

In May 2026, Chauen and his best friend Yogurin were lucky enough to be chosen for a little adventure into the local town. Chauen did absolutely amazingly from start to finish.
He jumped straight into the car without hesitation and settled in as if he had done it a hundred times before. Once in town, he walked beautifully through the streets on a quiet Sunday. Even so, he handled everything with ease — passing dogs, people, children playing, and the occasional traffic — all without a second thought. He simply strolled along, relaxed and confident, as though he had always been part of town life.
At one point, he happily stopped on a patch of green grass for cuddles and even enjoyed a playful roll, taking in the moment with pure contentment.
During the walk, a volunteer from the town happened to pass by in her car and pulled over to say hello. Chauen’s reaction was heart-melting — he was so excited to see her that he jumped straight through the car window to greet her and made himself comfortable inside, clearly showing how much he enjoys car rides and friendly faces.
The rest of the walk continued just as smoothly, including passing a playground with children nearby, which didn’t bother him at all. He remained calm, happy, and engaged throughout.
When it was time to return, he was more than happy to get back into the car… although once back at the pound, he very politely decided he wasn’t quite ready to get out again. Understandably so after such a lovely outing!
All in all, Chauen was simply outstanding — relaxed, social, confident, and clearly enjoying every moment of his little adventure.

Chauen deserves more than a life behind bars. He needs a home where he can run, play, and feel the sun on his fur. He is ready for a patient, loving family who will give him the exercise, guidance, and attention he has been longing for.

If you are looking for a devoted companion with a zest for life, Chauen may be the perfect match. Come meet him, take him for a walk, and see the bright spirit that has been waiting behind those bars for far too long. Perhaps he has been waiting for you.
