Ice – A Strong and Loving Boy Who Desperately Needs a Home
Ice arrived at the pound in April 2025, when he was around 8 years old. He is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier who was found wandering the streets, presumably abandoned, and brought to the pound.
When Ice arrived, he had many ticks but otherwise appeared to have been well cared for, suggesting that he may once have belonged to someone. In the beginning, when he went out for walks, he often stopped to look at passing cars, almost as if he was waiting for someone who never came. It was a heartbreaking reminder of how confusing such a big change must have been for him.
Over time, Ice settled into the routine at the pound, and we got to know him better. He enjoys human company and attention, but he also has a strong character and can be determined in certain situations. He needs someone who understands him, respects his boundaries and takes the time to build a trusting relationship with him.
Ice is not compatible with cats and needs to be the only dog in his future home.
Sadly, Ice spends more than 23 hours a day alone in a tiny cage. When he gets the chance to go out, it is often just to the patio and on his own. This is a lonely life for a dog who needs more than a few brief moments outside his cage each day.
Foster Update (February 2026)
Due to heavy rain and the risk of the pound flooding, Ice moved into a foster home where he could enjoy a safer and calmer environment.
After a couple of weeks in foster care, his foster shared some useful observations about him.
Ice is an affectionate dog who enjoys being close to his person and likes to keep an eye on what is going on around him. He forms strong bonds with people and also did very well with the son in the home.
He can be selective with other dogs, getting along well with some but not with others. He cannot live with cats and needs to be the only dog in his home.
Car travel makes Ice nervous and anxious, possibly due to past experiences. His foster believed that this could improve with gradual, positive exposure and routine, helping him associate car journeys with pleasant experiences.
Ice will need a patient and understanding home willing to give him time to settle, build trust and help him feel more comfortable in unfamiliar situations.
Sadly, after his time in foster care, Ice had to return to the pound. Once again, he found himself back in a cage, alone for most of the day.
The difference was heartbreaking. Just a few months earlier, Ice had seemed like a happier dog who enjoyed his time outside. After spending so much time alone again, he often lay on his bed and seemed to have lost some of his spark. Even when he went out onto the patio, we no longer saw the same happy dog.
Summer 2026 – A frightening fight for his health
During the summer of 2026, Ice became seriously ill. We were incredibly worried about him and, at times, feared he might not survive.
Ice was suffering from leishmaniasis, which was also affecting his joints and making life even harder for him. His skin deteriorated badly, and he was also struggling with diarrhoea. He was clearly very unwell, and it was heartbreaking to see him suffering while still living in the stressful conditions of the pound.
We desperately tried to find him a foster home where he could rest, receive more individual attention and recover in a peaceful environment, but sadly, we were unable to find one.
October 2026 – Slowly getting better
Thankfully, Ice is now receiving treatment and is slowly beginning to improve. He has started going out on short walks again and, in general, seems to be feeling better. After such a frightening period, every small sign of improvement is a relief.
But Ice still has a long way to go. We believe he would have a much better chance of recovering well in a home of his own. A quiet environment, a comfortable bed, gentle walks, regular care and someone who can keep an eye on how he is doing could make a real difference to his quality of life.
Ice has already lost so much time behind bars. He experienced the comfort of a home, only to lose it and return to a life of isolation. Now, while he is trying to regain his health, he deserves the chance to recover somewhere peaceful, rather than spending almost every hour of the day alone in a cage.
Ice needs a patient and understanding person who will give him time to settle, respect his need to be the only dog in the home, and help him enjoy life again at his own pace. His leishmaniasis requires ongoing treatment and veterinary monitoring, but it should not mean that he is overlooked. The specific treatment and costs can be discussed with us.
Ice may have a strong character, but that does not make him any less deserving of a chance. He needs the right person, someone willing to see him as an individual and offer him the stability and care he needs.
He deserves so much more than simply getting through each day in a cage. He deserves a home, a warm bed, and the opportunity to enjoy his walks and recover in peace, with someone by his side through the difficult days as well as the better ones.
Could you be the person Ice has been waiting for? ❤️🐾
