Spike – A Gentle Soul Left Waiting Too Long..
Spike arrived at the Los Barrios pound in April 2021, around 4.5 years old at the time. This beautiful Pitbull Terrier cross was found wandering the streets, likely abandoned, and brought to safety. But safety is not the same as home – and Spike has now spent over FOUR long years behind bars.
From the moment he arrived, Spike showed us what a gentle and loving dog he is. Calm and affectionate, he adores people and melts into cuddles. Yet behind his kind eyes lies a deep sadness – one that grows with every passing day spent in confinement. Once, he had a close canine friend to keep him company, but she was adopted long ago, leaving Spike more isolated than ever.
The years in a cage have slowly taken their toll. Spike is sad and lonely. Life at the pound is loud and chaotic, and for a quiet soul like his, it’s simply overwhelming. He waits, day after day, while life quietly passes him by.
Despite everything, Spike’s gentle nature still shines through. He loves walks, and he treasures every rare chance to leave his cage. A simple stroll, a pause for a treat, a kind touch – these are the moments he lives for...
In April 2022, two of our volunteers took Spike on a little outing to town. It was his first real adventure outside the pound, and he was overjoyed – so much to see, smell, and take in! Despite the blustery wind that day, he remained calm and unfazed by traffic, people, or children. He even showed polite curiosity toward other dogs, letting out a cheerful little whine before carrying on with his walk. He hopped in and out of the car with ease, and when it was time to return, his reluctance to go back into his cage said it all.
Then, in October 2024, a small miracle happened – Spike was offered a temporary foster home during a period of heavy rain and flood risk. After four years in a cage, we weren’t sure how he’d adapt to home life. But Spike amazed us all.
From day one, he settled in perfectly. He was clean indoors and calmly let his foster family know when he needed to go outside. He was left alone briefly one morning while they went shopping – and he didn’t bark, didn’t chew, didn’t have any accidents. When they returned, he simply wagged his tail in welcome.
On walks, he was curious and happy. He pulls a little on the lead, but he’s gentle and never reactive. He greets visitors warmly and behaved beautifully around other dogs during a day trip to Guadiaro. And after a visit to the supermarket, he went straight to the shopping bags – knowing there was a treat waiting just for him.
His foster family described him as a wonderful dog – affectionate, calm, and full of heart. For a brief moment, Spike finally got to feel what a real home is like.
But sadly, it was only for two short weeks. And then he was back. Back in the same cage. Back to the noise and loneliness. Waiting, once again.
Spike is now around 8 years old. Half of his life has been spent in a cage. We see him growing quieter, more withdrawn. He has waited far too long...
But recently, something changed – something small, yet deeply meaningful. Spike has found a new female dog friend. They go out together on the patio from time to time, and it’s heartbreaking to see just how happy that makes him. His eyes brighten, his tail wags, and for a little while, the heavy sadness lifts. It’s a simple joy, but for Spike, it’s something new. Something hopeful.
Please don’t let Spike’s story end here. He has so much love to give and asks for so little in return. All he needs is someone to open their heart and offer him a place to call home.
📍 Spike is at Los Barrios pound in southern Spain. Transport can be arranged.
